Welcome to Summer my brothers.

While not yet officially here as I write this message, Memorial Day weekend for many represents the unofficial start of the season many so look forward to in a state where temperature variations run in excess of 100 degrees each year. Summer seems to come and go so quickly in WI. Why can’t it slow down for a few months?

Attending graduation parties over the weekend I could not help but reflect on how quickly those I still think of as boys and girls have developed into young men and women with amazing adventures ahead of them. Their parents have gotten older as the years of raising children take their toll. Yes, that includes me as my strained back reminded me all weekend long. Time does indeed march on. A good friend of mine used to say that “life is a vapor.” So much opportunity packed into such a small window of time. With age comes wisdom and I’m just now truly realizing how important it is to take advantage of our individual opportunities and enjoy the gifts our creator continues to bless us with. Just a few to contemplate:

Family: The most important of our blessings. Our families hold the keys to our heritage, our traditions, upbringing, and hopefully still our comfort and support.

Spouses: Speaking personally, the single most important and best decision I have ever made in my life was to accept with a lifelong commitment the gift the lord brought into my life at just fifteen years old. Thirty-three years later, she remains the foundation of everything in my life. I suspect many of you have similar stories to tell.

Children: For those that have been blessed with them, what an amazing gift to watch our children grow and set out on their own paths. Our responsibilities as parents never end however neither do the rewards of a job well done.

Notice, there are no “material” blessings in this list. High incomes, lavish houses, or fancy new cars (sorry Matt Shelton 😊) do not make the list of those things we should most appreciate during the short time we are allotted. But please, my brothers, try to remember to take the time to appreciate and enjoy the moments with those around us. We have all been blessed with great gifts and have limited time to appreciate them.

A blessed and enjoyable Summer of 2018 to you all.

Jesse
