If anyone has been following Masonic social media pages, one may have seen a lot of discussion about religion, and specifically the Muslim faith. Generally, masonry tends to avoid topics of religion and politics, because it tends to bring disharmony and discord amongst brothers. The British Royal Navy recognized this same problem centuries ago, and by tradition, banned these topics from the Ward Room, or officers dining and lounge. Like the Royal Navy’s traditions, this is an important one for Freemasons to remember also. Also remembering a Mason’s need for circumspection and the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin’s social media policy, it is best to avoid these discussions altogether.
The bigger issue, and one that bothers me, is that we have brothers in this fraternity that would forget their obligation and attack others based on religion. True, many people do evil things in the name of religion, but we as Freemason should be accepting of all faiths, and show the world that men of all faiths CAN get along.
