Summer is in full swing and the craft couldn’t be busier. Blue lodge has degrees to plan, Shiners have parades to attend, even our York rite bodies have new candidates to schedule degrees.
I always tell people “ I would rather be busy then board” and I still stand by that statement but how busy is too busy? I am beginning to understand the phrase “ no time to breath” working third shift, ha being a four month old at home, making time for my wife, blue lodge, shrine, Scottish rite, and York rite.
The list gets longer and longer every day, but I always remember one of the working tools of the entered apprentice degree. The 24 inch gauge, which teaches us to have 8 hours for our usual vocation, 8 hours for the service to god, and 8 hours for rest and refreshments.
All of the parents out there know I can kiss 8 hours for rest and refreshment goodbye. I know many brothers out there who are in the same boat as me, burning the candle at both ends and getting burned out. Does that make us irresponsible for not knowing how to say “no” every now and then? I would sure hope not.
But I have learned to take small moments to myself and reflect on all my blessings in life. I am a father to a healthy baby boy whom I love with all my heart. My wife who is more than I could have dreamed I would spend the rest of my life with. All my family members are healthy and in good spirits, and being an active member in the greatest fraternity in human history.
I am truly blessed, and I will always remember that when I am feeling burned out or have zero motivation for the day. I hope all my brothers out there who carry the weight of the world out there shoulders will learn something from my ramblings and step back take a breath and remember you are never in this alone and I am sure I speak for all of the brothers when I say I love you.
