What would the perfect Lodge be like? Well, first we’d have perfect ritual work and several Brothers who knew each part. We’d have compelling social events that everyone wanted to attend. We would offer frequent Masonic education programs that taught valuable lessons about the many varied aspects of our Fraternity. We would hold fund-raising events so that we could contribute to worthy charities in our community and elsewhere. We would attend Grand Lodge and district meetings. We would visit other Lodges, hold Past Masters nights, Friends Day, Ladies and Widows Nights. We would even turn in our budgets on time!

But would that be enough? Is that what it takes to have the perfect Lodge? There is a certain hollow feeling to the list above. There’s something missing and it was brought home to me like a whack on the head this month. If a Brother’s wife passed, would we send a card? Call? Attend the funeral? Visit and listen? If a Brother was sick would we visit him in the hospital? Or send a card? What if we didn’t know about it? Then are we off the hook? Well, no. And that’s where we fall short without knowing it. We must make an effort to know our Brothers better, those who attend Lodge and those who don’t, so that we can be there to help share our Brothers’ joys and sorrows. All of us, whether we are active in Lodge or not. Promised to be ready to go on foot and out of our way…That may be the biggest step we could make towards becoming the perfect Lodge. And it is a 2-way street. Someday it will be us who needs a visit. It is not enough to send a card. Make the extra effort. Mea culpa.

Looking forward to seeing you in (and out of) Lodge!
Yours truly in Peace and Harmony,
Dan Maguire, WM
